I must have been about 10 or 11 when I first got into The Beatles. My first performance in front of an audience was when I was 11, when I played She’s Leaving Home on cello at the end of year talent show and I was always listening to my mum and dad’s old vinyl LPs and singles. Music was always an important aspect of family life and from a young age I can remember 60s music dominating my auntie’s family parties.
It wasn’t until I was 14 that I first picked up the guitar. I had a little Spanish guitar, and my dad, who used to be in bands in the late ’60s, taught me how to play all the chords. I mainly learnt to play by playing along to Beatles songs and writing my own songs – I wrote my first song about 2 months after picking up the guitar. More influences followed. My dad turned me on to The Byrds and The Beach Boys when I was 15 and at the same time Oasis and Crowded House were big in the UK, who I also got into. It was around this time that The Rembrandts released ‘I’ll Be There For You’ (The Friends Theme song) – I loved this song and knew straight away how I would like the band to sound (even though there wasn’t a band at the time!).
In 1998 I joined my first band. They were called ‘The Rockin’ Mojos’, but once I joined we changed the name of the band to ‘The Beatniks’. The advert that I saw in the local music store was for a bassist. At the time I had only ever picked up a six string guitar but luckily my dad still had his old bass Vox bass guitar stored away back at home. Before heading to the audition I watched the films ‘Back Beat’ (a film about The Beatles) and ‘Help’ and hoped that I had picked up enough to get by! Luckily enough, I did a reasonable enough job at the audition and made it into the band. The rhythm guitarist in the band was a couple of years older than me and was big on 60s beat as well. Through him my eyes were open to a whole new array of 60s bands – The Hollies, Dave Clark Five, Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Searchers, the list was endless! I soaked up all these influences and couldn’t get enough of it. Here was a wealth of band that, on first listen, ALL SOUNDED LIKE THE BEATLES!!! This had a massive effect on my song writing as well and all I wanted to do was emulate these bands.

About The Band:
Now, if you’re thinkin’ “just another Beatle tribute band”, you’re WRONG!! This amazing foursome writes and performs its own material in the 1960’s style of “Mersey beat”.
They’ve had scores of raving newspaper, radio and internet reviews, play the Cavern (as a ‘residency’, like their forefathers in the British Invasion), festivals and (again like their famous forefathers) every gig, small or large, to bring the best of rock to the beat to audiences. They’ve performed in front as many as 35,000 people, have supported some of the UK’s best acts, been in a Beatles film (the DVD Rare and Unseen: The Beatles), worked with a few major producers, have an album out on their own independent record label (and, soon, a second!) and played (and won!) on “BBC TV! Upstaged”.
Most recently, they were signed by NOMA Music to provide music for television shows and movies!
Want to know MORE?? Wait until our NEXT edition, where the lads will share some of their favourite VIDS with ya!
See ya on the FLIP SIDE!!
